Travel and Stay

While in Skagen

During the week of our wedding, we recommend leveraging the following resources to help make your stay as pleasant and convenient as possible:

    1. Join the shared What’s App group for communicating with your fellow wedding guests. This is a great resource for sharing tips and asking questions.
    2. Download the local Taxi App.
Denmark doesn’t allow Uber or Lyft, but offers a great English-language taxi app that works with Canadian/American phone numbers, credit cards and so forth. This is especially useful if you need a ride back to your guest house at the night of the wedding.
    3. Rent a bike to get around Skagen easily. Perhaps the best way to get around Skagen is by bicycle. Bike Rental services are abundant and relatively inexpensive. We used bikes 4 rent, located at Chr. Xs Vej 6A, 9990 Skagen, Denmark.
    4. Bus and Train Tickets. Bus and train tickets for all of Denmark can be purchased through the DOT Ticket app, available here.

Getting to Skagen

For guests visiting Denmark for the first time, it is important to know that Skagen is located a few hours away from most international airports. The closest major cities to Skagen are Aalborg and Frederikshavn. We are considering renting a minibus to transport guests from these two locations to Skagen. Please contact us if you are interested in taking advantage of this opportunity.

For guests planning to travel directly to the wedding, we recommend flying into Copenhagen or Amsterdam and then connecting to Aalborg.

Airports

Below, you’ll find the airports we recommend traveling to when flying to Skagen.

Aalborg Airport (1hr and 20 min drive to Skagen)

The closest airport to Skagen is Aalborg Airport.
Aalborg Airport has connecting flights from Copenhagen Airport and Amsterdam Airport. Both of these airports offer direct flights from major North American cities.

Billund Airport (3hr drive to Skagen)

Billund Airport has connecting flights from Copenhagen, Amsterdam, London, Paris, and other major European cities. It is slightly bigger than Aalborg airport and therefore offers more options for connections.

Billund is home to the LEGO headquarters, the original LEGOLAND amusement park, and the recently opened LEGO House. Christian enthusiastically recommends a visit to LEGOLAND.

The drive to Skagen from Billund airport offers a scenic view of the Danish country side and crosses through Denmark’s second largest city, Aarhus.

Copenhagen Airport (5hr drive to Skagen)

Denmark’s biggest airport offers the most connections and a series of direct flights from major North American cities including Toronto, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and New York. The drive to Skagen is a scenic drive across the Storebælt Bridge, through the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen (Odense) and through Aarhus, Denmark’s second largest city.

Ferry

Skagen is located a 20 minute drive from Frederikshavn, which offers connecting ferries to/from Oslo, Norway and Gothenburg, Sweden.

Train

The train and bus network in Denmark is very comprehensive. It’s possible to take a train into the center of Skagen from Copenhagen with only a few changes, however, it will take approximately 8 hours from Copenhagen to Skagen. The trains and busses all share the same ticket system, so it’s straight forward to purchase a single ticket. Google Maps is the best resource for finding the train and bus times.

Car rental

All the airports above offer onsite car rental services from Hertz, Avis, Budget, Alamo, Europcar, and Enterprise. We recommend making a reservation directly through either of their websites rather than a broker.
