Why Skagen?
We chose Skagen as the location for our wedding for its beautiful scenery and relaxed simplicity. Skagen is a place Christian’s family often visits for summer vacation, and it was the first place outside of his hometown of Herning that Christian took Margo in Denmark. For guests from outside Denmark, visiting Skagen provides insight into a more traditional and quintessentially Danish experience that can’t be found in a larger city.
Getting Around Skagen
Skagen is a small and walkable town. In the city centre you’ll find cobblestone pedestrian streets, and the nearby residential areas are well manicured and easily accessible. Undertaking excursions outside the city centre (like going out to visit the Grenen, Sunken Church, or Gammel Skagen) are more easily facilitated by bicycle or car.
Download the local Taxi App.
This is especially useful if you need a ride back to your guest house at the night of the wedding.
Rent a bike to get around Skagen easily
Bike Rental services are abundant and relatively inexpensive. We used Bikes 4 Sale, located at Skagavej 115, 9990 Skagen.
Art History in Skagen
From the late 1870s until the turn of the century, a group of Scandinavian artists descended on Skagen every summer. Known as the “Skagen Painters,” the group was inspired by the town’s quaint tranquility, unique sandy coastline, and the region’s famous translucent light that merged the sea and the sky (especially during the evening “blue hour”). While today, Skagen in summer is largely populated by Copenhageners on holiday, the influence of the Skagen Painters can be found throughout the city. Anchers Hus, Skagens Museum, and Drachmanns Hus all show collections of the Skagen Painters. Brøndums Hotel, was a favourite meeting place for the Skagen Painters, and is featured in many of the groups most famous works.
